Practical Training
First aid is a practical subject best taught through hands-on practice. That’s why our courses include plenty of scenarios to develop and test your skills.
Course Content
This is an in-depth course, covering the following areas:
- Managing an unconscious casualty in the outdoors (including shelter and insulation)
- Heart problems including cardiac arrest, CPR and defibrillator use
- Choking
- Seizures
- Bleeding and shock, including life threatening bleeding and tourniquet use
- Burns and scalds
- Heat and cold related conditions (hypothermia, heat exhaustion, heat stroke)
- Medical conditions including asthma, diabetes, anaphylaxis
- Bites, stings and poisoning
- Head and spinal injuries
- Torso injuries
- Limb injuries including splinting
- Crush injuries
- Managing a casualty whilst awaiting help, including vital signs monitoring

Who is it for
Successful completion of our 16 hour outdoor first aid course is suitable for a range of outdoor professionals including outdoor activity instructors, forestry contractors and more. The scope of the course is managing an emergency when help will be delayed by up to 2 hours. In practice, we recognise that an expected 2 hours could turn out to be longer, so realistically this course is aimed at those who are hours from help, rather than days from help.
Outdoor First Aid for Instructors
Most outdoor instructors operating away from fixed sites need an outdoor-specific qualification to maintain the validity of their qualifications. This course meets the requirements of British Canoeing, Mountain Training, British Cycling, the British Caving Association and other awarding organisations. This course sits on band 3 of the IOL statement of good practice. The qualification is valid for 3 years following successful completion of the course.
Outdoor First Aid for the Duke of Edinburgh’s Award Scheme
Most Duke of Edinburgh Award Licensed Organisations require expedition supervisors to hold a 16 hour outdoor first aid qualification. This course meets that requirement, so we frequently welcome DofE supervisors on to our courses.
Forestry +F First Aid for Contractors
This course meets the requirements of the Forestry Commission and Natural Resources Wales for contractors on their land. We can provide a separate +F certificate to successful candidates for an additional fee of £17.50pp. Eligible forestry workers in Wales can claim up to 75% funding for this course under the Focus on Forestry First skills development scheme.
Ministry of Defence SLC Funding
Eligible candidates can claim back up to 80% of the course cost under the MOD Standard Learning Credits Scheme.

Regulated Qualification
Our outdoor first aid course leads to a regulated qualification certificate, awarded by ITC First. The exams regulator for England (OFQUAL) has oversight of this qualification. By opting for a regulated qualification, you can be assured that your trainer is up to date and qualified to deliver this course. Our experienced trainers include active cavers, climbers, paddlesport coaches and mountain leaders with medical or rescue backgrounds.
Outdoor First Aid Venue and Pre-Course Information
You’ll receive an automated email with pre-course information when you book onto one of our open courses. If you have not received this it’s likely to be in your junk email.
Outdoor First Aid Health and Safety
As the course is practically assessed, there are points where candidates are asked to take the role of simulated casualties for other candidates. This can involve physical contact during casualty assessment and moving of casualties. If you are uncomfortable with this contact and would prefer not to be a simulated casualty, please discuss this with your trainer at the beginning of the course. You are able to decline to be a simulated casualty for any part of the course if you become uncomfortable with this role.
This course requires participants to undertake some degree of manual handling and physical exertion, including moving simulated casualties on the floor, and performing at least 2 minutes of chest compressions and rescue breaths on a manikin situated on the ground. The course may also involve moving over rough, uneven ground. If you think that you may have a condition, which may pose a problem or may prevent you from taking a full and active part on the course, we may be able to make a reasonable adjustment. Please see ITC First’s Access to Qualifications Information. If you would like to request a reasonable adjustment please let us know in advance of the course. You are advised that by registering on an ITC First qualification you are protected by Borderlands First Aid’s Policies, which are available on request, as well as ITC First’s set of policies including Complaints Policy and Appeals Policy. Please be aware that we will discuss some real-life incidents in detail and will view some slides and video of serious medical and traumatic incidents. If this is likely to cause you distress, please discuss this with your trainer in confidence prior to the course beginning so that we can make any necessary adjustments.
Outdoor First Aid Certification
In order to improve our environmental impact, we provide E-certificates to successful candidates as standard. If you need to have a paper certificate as well, we can provide this for an additional £7.50 per booking. Please add this to your booking here.
