Emergency First Aid at Work

Course Overview

Emergency First Aid Essentials

The 1 day Emergency First Aid at Work course is suitable for most small and low risk workplaces. It’s also an ideal starting point for anyone wanting to learn first aid for personal peace of mind.

We cover the most serious first aid scenarios you’re likely to encounter in a practical, hands-on manner. That means you should leave the course with increased confidence to manage a real emergency.

HSE First Aid at Work?

The HSE stopped ‘approving’ first aid training providers in 2013. Since then, they’ve produced advice for employers to ensure that trainers are up to date and appropriately qualified. One of the easiest ways of ensuring this is to use a provider of regulated qualifications, which is why we do just that. All of our first aid qualifications are awarded by ITC First, a specialist first aid awarding organisation. The exams regulators for England (OFQUAL) or Scotland (SQA Accreditation) regulate this qualification.

Course Content

In line with the course content required by the HSE, you’ll learn:

  • The role and responsibilities of a first-aider
  • How to manage an unconscious casualty
  • Treatment for seizures
  • Recognising and treating heart conditions, including cardiac arrest, CPR and defibrillator use
  • First aid for choking
  • First aid for bleeding and shock

Who is it for

Our 1 day Emergency First Aid at Work course is aimed at those operating in small and low risk workplaces. If you need help calculating your first aid requirements, the HSE first aid at work regulations has a useful requirements calculator or get in touch if you need to clarify anything.

Emergency First Aid at Work Health and Safety

This course requires participants to undertake some degree of manual handling and physical exertion, including moving simulated candidates on the floor and performing simulated chest compressions and rescue breaths on a manikin for at least 2 minutes. Manikins will be situated on the ground. If you think that you may have a condition, which may pose a problem or may prevent you from taking a full and active part on the course, we may be able to make a reasonable adjustment.  Please see ITC First’s Access to Qualifications Information If you would like to request a reasonable adjustment please let us know in advance of your course.

You are advised that by registering on an ITC First qualification you are protected by Borderlands First Aid’s Policies, which are available on request, as well as ITC First’s set of policies including Complaints Policy and Appeals Policy. Please be aware that we will discuss some real-life incidents in detail and may view some slides and video of serious medical and traumatic incidents. If this is likely to cause you distress, please discuss this with your trainer in confidence prior to the course beginning so that we can make any necessary adjustments.
