Course dates
Our next Advanced Outdoor First Aid course will take place on 9, 10 and 11 December 2026 at the Gilwern Outdoor Education Centre.
Course Overview
Renewing your outdoor first aid course again and looking for a step beyond the usual? This could be the course for you. The ITC Advanced Outdoor First Aid course is aimed at taking you beyond the basics and equipping you with a more in depth understanding of vital signs for proactive first aid, as well as some more advanced techniques for first aid in remote scenarios.
First Aid at Work
Within this course, we also cover the content required for the 3 day First Aid at Work qualification, so you can obtain this qualification at the same time for an additional registration and certification fee of £24pp.
Hands on scenarios
Working with a more experienced group of candidates, and with more time available on the course, we have the time to run more complex scenarios than on the 16 hour course. We also consider team roles and multiple casualty scenarios in more depth.
Course Content
This is a detailed course, covering the following:
Advanced Outdoor First Aid: Building on the Basics
As this course builds on the existing knowledge obtained through our 16 hour outdoor first aid qualification, we’re only able to offer places to those with previous outdoor first aid experience / qualification. If you are unsure about whether your existing certificate meets this requirement, just get in touch and we’ll be glad to discuss. This also means that this course is not directly bookable on our website, you’ll need to email us with a copy of your existing certificate before we can accept you on the course.
Advanced Outdoor First Aid for Expeditions
This course includes the content required of overseas expedition leaders for a range of companies including World Challenge. We still focus on the fundamentals of first aid however, and this is not a professional pre-hospital care qualification, covering the use of advanced equipment that most expedition leaders are unlikely to have access to.
We run this course at the Gilwern Outdoor Education centre, NP7 0EB, close to the A465 Heads of the Valleys road at Abergavenny.
Course Fee
Places on this course are priced at £250pp (including VAT). If you also require registration on the L3 First Aid at Work qualification, running alongside the advanced outdoor first aid, this is an additional £24pp (including VAT).
Course Timings
The course will run 9-5.30 on day 1 and 2, and 9-3.30 on day 3.
External Oversight
This course is quality assured both by Borderlands First Aid and our external awarding organisation ITC First. ITC are the awarding organisation for the outdoors and are experts in the field, with a long history of managing and overseeing first aid for outdoor settings.
Advanced Outdoor First Aid: Building on the Basics
As this course builds on the existing knowledge obtained through our 16 hour outdoor first aid qualification, we’re only able to offer places to those who have already completed an outdoor first aid course previously. If you are unsure about whether your existing certificate meets this requirement, just get in touch and we’ll be glad to discuss. This also means that this course is not directly bookable on our website, you’ll need to email us with a copy of your existing certificate before we can accept you on the course.
Outdoor First Aid Health and Safety
This course requires participants to undertake some degree of manual handling and physical exertion, including moving simulated candidates on the floor, performing simulated chest compressions on a manikin and moving over rough, uneven ground. If you think that you may have a condition, which may pose a problem or may prevent you from taking a full and active part on the course, we may be able to make a reasonable adjustment. Please see ITC First’s Access to Qualifications Information If you would like to request a reasonable adjustment please let us know in advance of the course. You are advised that by registering on an ITC First qualification you are protected by Borderlands First Aid’s Policies, which are available on request, as well as ITC First’s set of policies including Complaints Policy and Appeals Policy. Please be aware that we will discuss some real-life incidents in detail and will view some slides and video of serious medical and traumatic incidents. If this is likely to cause you distress, please discuss this with your trainer in confidence prior to the course beginning so that we can make any necessary adjustments.
Outdoor First Aid Certification
In order to improve our environmental impact, we provide E-certificates to successful candidates as standard. If you need to have a paper certificate as well, we can provide this for an additional £7.50 per booking.
