Thank you for booking onto the above course, which will take place at The Christian Adventure Centre, Viney Hill, near Lydney, GL15 4NA. The entrance to the centre is on a drive next to the Viney Hill church (just before the church on the right if approaching from Blakeney and just after the church on your left if coming through Yorkley), with the centre located behind the church. The course will be based in the ‘Stables’ building, opposite the main reception.

Arrival

Please arrive at 8.45AM for registration prior to the start of the course. Please note that, in order to meet the requirements of the awarding body, this course has a 16 hour duration, running from 9AM to 6PM on both days, and all elements of the syllabus must be covered. This means that late arrivals may not be able to complete the course satisfactorily and may therefore not receive the qualification certificate.

As the course is an externally accredited qualification, all candidates will be required to produce photographic identification on signing the course register. If you have any doubt as to whether your ID document is acceptable, please contact us before the course. Failure to produce appropriate identification will unfortunately mean we are unable to register you on the course, with no refunds available under these circumstances.

Clothing and Equipment

Clothing for the course should be comfortable enough to enable you to move around easily. Loose fitting clothing and flat shoes are therefore appropriate. It is advisable to avoid wearing large items of jewellery or restrictive garments.

As this is an outdoor specific first aid course, much of the course will be spent outside. We may be outside for periods of 2-3 hours at a time, so please ensure you bring sufficient warm and waterproof clothing to cope with the elements. This should include a warm hat and gloves. Waterproofs are needed regardless of the weather as some of our scenarios will require participants to be dressed for poor weather conditions.

As part of the learning process, candidates will be asked to take the role of casualties at various stages in the course. During our outdoor scenarios we may utilise wound simulations, including fake blood. If you are happy to be made up in this way, please bring some old clothing that you do not mind getting dirty.

Assessment and certification

The course is a regulated qualification with certificates issued by the awarding body ITC First. Your trainer will assess you by witnessing you demonstrating a number of practical skills throughout the course and asking questions to confirm your understanding.

As the qualification is issued by ITC First rather than Borderlands, your trainer will be able to inform you whether they believe you have satisfied the requirements of the qualification at the end of the course, but final confirmation of results comes from ITC First and so certificates are posted out a short while after the course.

We may utilise the latest ‘QCPR’ manikins in our CPR training, enabling you to receive detailed digital feedback to help you improve the effectiveness of your chest compressions and mouth to mouth ventilations. This does not form part of your assessment but is a useful, optional, training aid. The QCPR manikins work via your smartphone over a Bluetooth connection. If you’d like to make the most of this, you’ll need to download the Laerdal Medical QCPR Learner app, free for Android and Apple devices. Please ensure it’s the learner app you download, rather than the QCPR instructor app.

Health and Safety

This course requires participants to undertake some degree of manual handling and physical exertion, including moving simulated candidates on the floor, performing simulated chest compressions on a manikin and moving over rough, uneven ground.

If you think that you may have a condition, which may pose a problem or may prevent you from taking a full and active part on the course, we may be able to make a reasonable adjustment.  Please see ITC First’s Access to Qualifications Information If you would like to request a reasonable adjustment please use the Reasonable Adjustment Request Form.

You are advised that by registering on an ITC First qualification you are protected by Borderlands First Aid’s Policies, which are available on request, as well as ITC First’s set of policies including Complaints Policy and Appeals Policy.

Please be aware that we will discuss some real life incidents in some detail and will view some slides and video of serious medical and traumatic incidents. If this is likely to cause you distress, please discuss this with your trainer in confidence prior to the course beginning so that we can make any necessary adjustments.

Refreshments

We will provide tea, coffee, cold drinks and light snacks for break times during the course. If you have any specific dietary requirements, please inform us in advance. We will have a 30 minute lunch break on each day of the course but lunch is not provided, so please ensure that you bring lunch with you for each day of the course.
